Welcome to the Charlbury Corner House & Memorial Hall

Located in the heart of Charlbury only three minutes walk from the main car park. The Corner House is the ideal venue for meetings and group activities. A distinctive, historic building that was gifted to the town for recreational and educational purposes. It is home to the Cornerstone and Community Second hand Bookshop. The Memorial Hall, opened in 1956 in honour of those who served and those who lost their lives in two World Wars, is used on a daily basis for all manner of activities and events.

Occupying a key position in the town centre, The Corner House is Grade II listed. It dates in part from the 17th Century or even earlier, with the Market Street facade added probably in the 1720s. In 1938, The Corner House was bought by Mr and Mrs C H Morris, then living at Lee Place, who in an act of great generosity gave it to the town at the end of the Second World War. Their intention to build a hall in what was then The Corner House garden as a memorial to Charlburians lost in the World Wars was realised about ten years later, bringing together the complex of buildings that we see today.

Charlbury Street Fair

Charlbury Street Fair is held in September each year and has taken place every year since the early 1950’s. There are a host of different stalls and activities for children and adults alike, complete with a fairground on the Playing Close. See our events page for further details closer to the time.

The organising committee also organise fund raising events throughout the year. The main purpose is to raise money for the upkeep of the Corner House and the War Memorial Hall.

The Charity

Owned by the town, for the town, The Corner House and the Memorial Hall lie at the centre of Charlbury, both geographically and in peoples’ hearts and minds. The Corner House has provided a focus for community social and educational activities since the 1940s, with a greater range of facilities added when the Memorial Hall opened in the 1950s. Together, they provide the people of Charlbury and the surrounding district with a much-loved and well-used resource, offering activity space as well as a home for Charlbury’s museum and social charities that have become increasingly important in recent times.

For many years, the Town Council assumed responsibility for the management and upkeep of the buildings. That changed in 2008 with the creation of the Charlbury Corner House and War Memorial Hall Charity, which draws its trustees from amongst the groups that benefit from the buildings’ facilities. And now, in 2022, things are changing again, with a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation, the Charlbury Corner House and Memorial Hall Trust, set to assume responsibility.

Working closely with the community, the museum, local government, the heritage sector and funders, the Trust intends to explore ways in which The Corner House in particular can be renovated to improve its accessibility, energy efficiency and sustainability. By doing so, we can ensure that future generations can enjoy, gain benefit and take pride in Charlbury’s most iconic asset.

The current trustees of The Charlbury Corner House and Memorial Hall Trust are Roy Scott (Chairman), Paddy Gallagher (Treasurer), Simon Walker (Secretary), Tim Crisp, Richard Fairhurst, Paul Jackson (Renovation Fund), John Partington and Jeff West.
