Owned by the town, for the town, The Corner House and the Memorial Hall lie at the centre of Charlbury, both geographically and in peoples’ hearts and minds. The Corner House has provided a focus for community social and educational activities since the 1940s, with a greater range of facilities added when the Memorial Hall opened in the 1950s. Together, they provide the people of Charlbury and the surrounding district with a much-loved and well-used resource, offering activity space as well as a home for Charlbury’s museum and social charities that have become increasingly important in recent times.
For many years, the Town Council assumed responsibility for the management and upkeep of the buildings. That changed in 2008 with the creation of the Charlbury Corner House and War Memorial Hall Charity, which draws its trustees from amongst the groups that benefit from the buildings’ facilities. And now, in 2022, things are changing again, with a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation, the Charlbury Corner House and Memorial Hall Trust, set to assume responsibility.
Working closely with the community, the museum, local government, the heritage sector and funders, the Trust intends to explore ways in which The Corner House in particular can be renovated to improve its accessibility, energy efficiency and sustainability. By doing so, we can ensure that future generations can enjoy, gain benefit and take pride in Charlbury’s most iconic asset.
The current trustees of The Charlbury Corner House and Memorial Hall Trust are Roy Scott (Chairman), Paddy Gallagher (Treasurer), Simon Walker (Secretary), Tim Crisp, Brian Ford and John Partington.
